The Shira Route is one of the less crowded routes on Kilimanjaro, offering an excellent experience for trekkers seeking a quieter journey with stunning scenery. The route begins at the Shira Gate and is often considered an extension of the Lemosho Route. This route offers a gradual ascent, providing better acclimatization opportunities.

Elevation: 1,800m (Shira Gate) to 3,850m (Shira Camp)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Begin your trek at Shira Gate and ascend through the rainforest to reach Shira Camp.
Enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscape.
Overnight at Shira Camp with dinner.
Elevation: 3,850m (Shira Camp) to 4,600m (Lava Tower) and down to 3,950m (Barranco Camp)
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Trek towards the Lava Tower, an ancient volcanic feature, and continue down into the Barranco Valley.
This day provides excellent acclimatization opportunities due to the high elevation and the descent into Barranco Camp.
Overnight at Barranco Camp with dinner.
Elevation: 3,950m (Barranco Camp) to 4,035m (Karanga Camp)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Hike up the Barranco Wall and then continue on a moderate ascent to Karanga Camp.
The Barranco Wall is a challenging but rewarding section of the route.
Overnight at Karanga Camp with dinner.
Elevation: 4,035m (Karanga Camp) to 4,640m (Barafu Camp)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Ascend to Barafu Camp, where you will rest and prepare for your summit attempt.
The camp is located on a rocky, barren plateau, providing excellent views of the mountain.
Overnight at Barafu Camp, with an early dinner and rest.
Elevation: 4,640m (Barafu Camp) to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) and descent to 3,080m (Mweka Camp)
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours (Ascent and Descent)
Begin the summit climb around midnight, aiming to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise.
After celebrating at the summit, begin the descent to Mweka Camp for an overnight rest.

Elevation: 3,080m (Mweka Camp) to 1,650m (Mweka Gate)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Complete the descent through the rainforest back to Mweka Gate.
Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi/Arusha for a celebration dinner.
