8-Day Rongai Route Trekking

The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is a less trafficked route and provides an amazing experience with diverse landscapes.

Your Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival in Moshi/Arusha

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha.
Pre-climb briefing with your guide for an equipment check, safety instructions, and an overview of the trek.
Overnight at your hotel with dinner included.

DAY 2

Moshi/Arusha to Rongai Gate to Rongai Camp

Elevation: 1,950m (Rongai Gate) to 2,600m (Rongai Camp)
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
After registration at Rongai Gate, drive to the trailhead and begin trekking through the forest.
Enjoy views of the Maasai steppe and spot wildlife, such as monkeys, birds, and sometimes elephants in the distance.
Overnight at Rongai Camp with dinner.

DAY 3

Rongai Camp to Second Cave Camp

Elevation: 2,600m to 3,450m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Continue through the moorland zone with breathtaking views of the Eastern ice fields of Kilimanjaro.
The trek offers plenty of wildlife sightings and spectacular landscapes.
Overnight at Second Cave Camp with dinner.

DAY 4

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Elevation: 3,450m to 3,600m
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Continue along the trail toward Kikelewa Camp, situated in a stunning location with panoramic views of Mawenzi Peak.
Enjoy an afternoon acclimatization walk if needed to adjust to the altitude.
Overnight at Kikelewa Camp with dinner.

DAY 5

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Ascend through rocky terrain, reaching the base of Mawenzi Peak, which offers dramatic views.
Mawenzi Tarn Camp is located near Mawenzi’s impressive rock formations, perfect for photography.
Overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Camp with dinner.

Meals: Dinner
DAY 6

Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 4,330m to 4,703m (Kibo Hut)
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
After an early breakfast, continue toward Kibo Hut, passing through the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.
As you approach Kibo Hut, enjoy incredible views of the surrounding volcanic terrain.
Overnight at Kibo Hut with an early dinner in preparation for the summit attempt.

DAY 7

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,703m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) and descent to 3,080m (Mweka Camp)
Hiking Time: 10–14 hours (Ascent and Descent)
Start the summit climb around midnight to reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise.
After celebrating your achievement at the summit, begin your descent to Mweka Camp for rest.
Overnight at Mweka Camp with dinner.

DAY 8

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi/Arusha

Elevation: 3,080m to 1,650m
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Complete the descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.
Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi/Arusha for celebration and relaxation.
